The Greater Stockholm Veterinary Hospital Foundation was established in 1969 with the aim of promoting and providing round-the-clock healthcare for animals in greater Stockholm region. The aim was to guarantee accessible, high-quality, continuously updated in- and outpatient veterinary care,
The original founders included the Swedish Kennel Club, Svenska Blå Stjärnan (Swedish Blue Star), Svenska Djurskyddsföreningen (Swedish Animal Protection Foundation) and the City of Stockholm. The first three remain an active part of the Foundation.
To achieve the aim, the Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation, has regularly invested in advanced medical equipment as well as in developing the skills of employees at the veterinary hospitals they previously owned. The investments are made possible by private means, bequests and other donations.
